전시주제 “공유공간”
‘Commons as Space’는 단순히 다수가 이용하는 공용 공간을 의미하지 않는다. 그것은 공동체가 함께 관리하고 의미를 부여하는 사회적 자원으로서의 공간을 지칭한다. 역사적으로 ‘commons’는 특정 개인의 소유가 아닌 공동체가 공유하던 토지와 자원을 뜻했으며, 오늘날에는 광장·시장·공원 등 물리적 장소를 넘어 공유주거, 협업공간, 디지털 네트워크 등의 형태로 확장하고 있다.
이러한 공간은 물리적 차원에 머물지 않고 사회적 규범, 문화적 실천, 제도적 장치와 상호작용 속에서 작동한다. 따라서 건축에서 commons는 단순한 공용 공간이 아니라, 개인과 집단, 사적 권리와 공적 책임, 협력과 갈등이 교차하는 관계적 구조로 이해될 수 있으며 건축가는 이와 같은 긴장과 가능성을 공간적으로 구현하는 방식을 모색하게 된다.
2025 한국건축설계학회 국제 초대작가전은 ‘Commons as Space’를 통해 건축이 사회적 공유지로서 수행할 수 있는 역할을 탐구한다. 전시는 공유공간의 다양한 건축적 유형을 제시하며, commons를 단순히 개방된 장소가 아니라 공유와 참여, 협력과 갈등이 교차하는 과정적 장으로 조명한다. 이를 통해 건축이 공동체의 삶을 조직하고 새로운 공공성을 형성하며, 사회적 자원의 분배와 삶의 질 향상에 기여할 수 있는 가능성을 모색하고자 한다.

ADIK International Invitational Exhibition
The 2025 ADIK (Architecture Design Institute of Korea) International Invitational Exhibition will be held under the theme “Commons as Space” from December 5 to December 8, 2025, at Sewoon Hall in Seoul.
We warmly encourage the active participation of our members, as your involvement will make an important contribution to the advancement of both creative works and academic activities of ADIK. We invite both individual and group members to take part in this exhibition.
Theme Commons as Space
“Commons as Space” does not simply denote public areas accessible to many. Rather, it refers to space as a social resource—defined by communal governance and shared significance. Historically, the term “commons” indicated land and resources shared by communities, rather than owned by individuals. Today, its scope extends beyond plazas, markets, and parks to include forms such as co-housing, collaborative workspaces, and even digital networks.
Such spaces operate not only in the physical dimension but also through their interactions with social norms, cultural practices, and institutional frameworks. In architecture, therefore, the commons should be understood not as mere public facilities, but as relational structures where individuals and collectives, private rights and public responsibilities, cooperation and conflict intersect. Architects are thus called upon to spatialize these tensions and possibilities.
The 2025 Invitational Exhibition of the Architecture Design Institute of Korea explores the role of architecture as a form of social commons under the theme “Commons as Space.” The exhibition presents diverse architectural typologies of shared space, reframing the commons not as a static, open site, but as a dynamic arena in which sharing and participation, cooperation and contestation are continually negotiated. Through this lens, the exhibition seeks to examine how architecture can organize communal life, foster new forms of publicness, and contribute to the equitable distribution of social resources and the enhancement of quality of life.
